Visions for the Hominy Creek Greenway

We have a special tract of land that has been preserved for our community. We should work to maintain its special qualities.

Some of the uses I see for the property include:

Community park – The Greenway is an informal community park where neighbors can walk along the creek. Being maintained our local community will create a unique space in the city of Asheville.

Wildlife habitat – The creek corridor provides habitat for many water birds, turkeys, birds of prey, songbirds, raccoons, possums, and other animals. It is a stop on migratory flyways for many species. The area should be developed to be a food source for area and migrating birds.

Forest Garden – A section of the area overgrown with invasive species could be replanted with native berry and nut trees. One section could be set aside for an orchard of fruit trees.

Native Plant Sanctuary – Native plants still grow on the property, though most have been lost to clearing and the invasion of alien specie. Several sections of the property could be become demonstration areas.

Outdoor Classroom – The creek could offer excellent educational space for the students of Vance Elementary, the Asheville School, Sand Hill-Venable, Rainbow Mountain Children's School and others. Topics can include animal habitat, watershed management, erosion control, land restoration, environmental stewardship and more.

Community Gardens – The areas to the north of the trail starting at the Sand Hill gate would make a great community garden area.

Performance space – An outdoor stage could provide outdoor performance space in a rustic setting. The stage would provide local performers an informal stage for productions and could offer a fund-raising source for the Friends of Hominy Creek Greenway.
