Friends of Hominy Creek Greenway
The Friends of Hominy Creek Greenway is a group of neighbors and other stakeholders who are creating a vision and working to create a special park for our community
Our Vision
- Create a community greenway park as a bike and pedestrian trail with foot paths in a natural environment
- Create a group of stakeholders to work with the Greenway Commissions and the City of Asheville in planning the greenway and park
- Build a community pavilion and picnic tables at the confluence of Buttermilk Creek and Hominy Creek so neighbors can gather for potlucks and other events
- Create community gardens and/or edible forest garden in wide areas at either end of the property
- Develop the property as a park while maintaining wildlife habitat
- Create a pervious trail that can be used by walkers and cyclists
- Create mulched foot trails through wooded areas after clearing
- Maintain a natural feel in the landscape with native plantings
- Develop environmental education opportunities for nearby schools
- Maintain wildlife habitat
- Preserve habitat for the deer, fox, coyotes, beavers, otters, turkey, raccoons, birds and other wildlife that are there now
- Gradually replace non-native plants with native, food producing plant
- Create habitat along property boundary – work with Shelburne property owners about creating a buffer
- Create partnerships
- Utilize the wealth of talent we have in our community
- Partner with organizations to help with different needs
